THE LUCHETTI SCULPTURE AND
DRAWING STUDIO

Drawing by Mary Ann LuchettiMary Ann Luchetti first came to Florence in 1967 as a volunteer. After seeing photos of the figurative work she had done for her MFA from Brooklyn's Pratt Institute, then Superintendent of Monuments in Tuscany Ugo Procacci sent her to the Center of Restoration in Palazzo Davanzati, to work on the final restoration of flood-damaged marble sculptures. At the time she couldn't speak a word of Italian.

The experience of handling Greek, Roman, and Renaissance figurative sculpture proved crucial to the development of her own work. She continued to return to Florence whenever possible, then came on sabbatical from L.S.U. Baton Rouge to learn hand chasing, not just to be able to control the surfaces of her bronzes, but also to teach it to her Metal Design students.

She now lives and works out of her own studio in the heart of San Frediano, the artisan's quarter in the center of historic Florence. In addition to doing her own work, she teaches figurative sculpture and Drawing to individuals or small groups. Her Italian is now rapid fire, but with a definite Brooklyn accent.
