20 years ago, Enrica Novelli Franzil and her husband decided to
transform the rustic farm
they'd bought outside the Southern Tuscan town of Sarteano into a summer place
where they could spend time with their children. Now they'd like to share it
with you.
A typical Tuscan Casa Colonica, Il Pirro is quite large. It has three apartments for guests:
There is ample parking,
and complete access to the grounds (about 40 acres). All apartments have
televisions and radios, and there is a fax machine in the main offices. Pets
are Welcome. The apartments have central heating, and some of the rooms have
individual air conditioning, should it be necessary (there is a charge for air
conditioning).
Sarteano is perfect for exploring Central and Southern Tuscany: It's a 20 minute drive from Montepulciano and Pienza, and not much further from San Quirico d'Orcia, the town whose garden inspired Palazzo Pitti's. Nearby are Monte Oliveto Maggiore, Murlo, with its Ertuscan Museum, and then Siena. Southwest there's Monte Amiata. Pienza is due north. East there's Lake Trasimeno, while Perugia and Cortona are about a half hour's drive; Assisi is just a little further. The entrance to the autostrada is just 2 km distant, making Il Pirro ideally located for day trips to Florence, Orvieto, and even Rome.
Il Pirro also has a swimming pool,
a soccer field, a play
ground, and a stand of umbrella pines where you can hunt pinoli. If you want to
learn how to make pizza using a traditional wood-fired oven, Enrica often does
and will be happy to teach you. There is a huge vegetable garden, and if you
wish to join Enrica's family for a meal, perhaps learning how to make polenta
(she's from the north) or how to grill meats over the coals in the Tuscan way,
you'll be more than welcome. More structured cooking classes can be arranged,
and, if you are interested in learning the ancient art of making lace, well,
Enrica's work is nationally recognized (she did the lace in the background).
Il Pirro offers another invaluable attraction to parents: Baby Sitting. Enrica was an elementary school teacher for many years, and also entertained children on summer cruise ships before she married and had three children of her own. Should your child (age 3-10) require baby sitting, on an hourly, daily, or weekly basis, she will be happy to babysit (there is a 15,000 lire/hour fee).
