An unusual and relaxing way of using the Easter break is to enjoy one of the art and culture courses which are held yearly at the Fortezza Orsini at Sorano in southern Tuscany. Sorano is in the heart of the ancient Etruscan triangle, a little known part of the region but one which has much fascination for those who prefer to discover the smaller towns and out of the way places.
The course on the Etruscan civilisation in the Flora valley will include guided excursions to the archeological sites in Sorano, Pitigliano and Sovana - the necropoli, the cave paths, temples and settlements - and a related study of the volcanic and cliff formation in this part of the Maremma. The cost of this course is Lit. 500,000.
There will also be a pottery course covering the basic techniques of clay preparation and modelling, the various methods of glazing and firing including bucchero, the ancient Etruscan method of blackening. The cost of both this course and the third course, in outdoor drawing and oil painting, is Lit. 600,000, which includes materials.
The courses run from April 9 - 14 and are being organised by PANDORA, who will also advise on accommodation. Contact PANDORA Cultural Association, Tel/Fax O564 633 398.
