La Libreria: Wine Books

While websites are wonderful for some things, there are times when what you really want is a book:

  • It's chilly, and you want to curl up in front of the fire with a glass of good wine….
  • You've got friends coming to dinner and you want to serve up an authentic Tuscan meal….
  • You need to know all about a particular topic….

Amazon LogoWith the help of the folks at Amazon.com, the world's leading on-line bookstore, we have put together a selection of our favorite books, books we turn to when we need information, inspiration, or simply relaxation.

How it works: Read the descriptions (some have links that lead to more detailed information), and, if you decide you'd like to buy a book, click on the link that says, "I'd like to see the order form." This will lead you to Amazon.com's order form for the book. Fill in the order, send it off, and Amazon will bill you and send you the book. We do get a commission on some of the books ordered through our website, so we ask that if you would like several of the books we have listed, you order them all through our pages. Thank you so much!

And good reading!

The Books:

  • Adventures on the Wine Route, by Kermit Lynch. Kermit has made his fortune rattling over the back roads of France in a tireless search for the best there is. He is sometimes amazed by what he finds, and sometimes appalled, but never indifferent. This is a delightful book, and does more to explain the mysteries of wine than any other we've read. I'd Like to See the Order Form.
  • Chianti and the Wines of Tuscany, by Rosemary George. Ms George's first taste of Chianti was a "Chianti Bianco," on a train when she was a student. Perhaps it's fitting that she became a Master of Wine and wrote the most comprehensive book on Tuscan wines to date. A critical study, and a book you should read if you want to buy Tuscan wines: Ms. George is equally willing to give praise or point out flaws, and isn't awed by anyone. According to Amazon, though the book is not out of print, the publisher says it's "out of stock" - a way of saying you may have to hunt for it. I'd Like to See the Order Form.
  • Vinum, the Story of Roman Wine, by Stewart Flemming. Though grapes are native to the Caucasus they migrated west to the Mediterranean Basin with the dawn of civilization, and arrived in Italy with the Greeks if not sooner. Those early agronomists quickly realized that the Italian peninsula was ideally suited to grape cultivation, and also realized that the peoples inhabiting the Peninsula were extraordinarily good clients... • Brunello to Zibibbo, by Nicholas Belfrage. Perhaps the finest detailed look at the central and south Italian wine scenetoday. Read a longer review. No thanks, I'd like to see the Order Form.
  • Italian Wine For Dummies, by Mary Ewing-Mulligan and Ed McCarthy. An excellent introduction to the complexities of the Italian wine scene, with many suggestions for selecting wines. Read a longer review. No thanks, I'd like to see the Order Form.
  • Vino Italiano, the Regional Wines of Italy, by Joseph Bastianich and David Lynch. An excellent overview of Italian wine producing regions, with notes on the various DOCs, recipes, and rundowns of producers as well. Read a longer review. No thanks, I'd like to see the Order Form.
  • Viaggio Tra i Grandi Vini di Sicilia, by Andrea Zanfi. Andrea spent a great deal of time criscrossing Sicily, meeting winemakes and talking with them while Giò Martorano prowled about taking photos; the pair did an excellent job and though you will put it on your coffee table, you'll also read it. There are both Italian and English editions. Read a longer review. No thanks, I'd like to see the Order Form.
